Ministry Services, in collaboration with the Associates, started a new initiative to explore with SSND Associates the possibility of serving on an SSND ministry board. To introduce this opportunity, Ministry Services offered a first-time virtual gathering with Associates who were interested in exploring a possible call to such a ministry.
The evening was intended to support their discernment in that regard. Facilitators were Maryanne O’Donnell, SSND Associate, and Kathleen Cornell, SSND. Both have extensive experience of serving on SSND boards and committees. After opening prayer and introductions, Maryanne and Sister Kathleen shared why they chose to serve in that way. Among many things they highlighted were their sense of maximizing living their role and responsibility as an Associate and living the mutually dynamic relationship of sponsorship between the ministry and SSND as sponsor.
Sister Kathleen emphasized that the sponsored ministries are SSND’s legacy, and serving on a board is “carrying out the mission by involving others.” It allows for education in the broadest sense and sees members of the board as partners in mission. The SSND mission was lifted up as a distinguishing factor between serving on a secular non-profit board and an SSND ministry board. Participants were asked to consider their connection to the mission; with regards to the ministry, What ‘grabs their heart?’ as this is the starting point for being an advocate for the ministry.
The group further explored what it takes to serve on a ministry board, and the element of ‘time’ was named an important factor in one’s discernment. Some people new to boards may be intimidated by finances or philanthropic efforts, but the board as a whole can mentor a new person into those areas.
Finally, it was explored what one would gain by serving on an SSND ministry board. Among many benefits gathered was the inspiration one receives by witnessing the dedication, expertise and commitment of other board members, and the opportunity to always learn more and seek more for the ministry and oneself. Growth and transformation in the SSND spirit are gifts received when serving on an SSND ministry board.
Suzy Blackburn, Director of Associates, welcomed the intentionality of this new initiative and hopes that this new opportunity will focus the covenantal relationship of Associates with SSND.
