Sister Margaret Mary Glick, SSND
July 4, 1928 – April 20, 2022
Margaret Mary, the youngest of five children, was born on Independence Day, 1928 in Cumberland, Md. to deeply Catholic parents, Francis and Helen Wieseckel Glick. The close and loving Glick family was struck with sadness on the death of their father, Francis, when Margaret Mary was just four years old.
Margaret began her education in Cumberland, but the family soon moved to Hagerstown. Margaret went to St. Mary’s School for grammar and high school classes. Margaret and her brother, Bill, each realized at an early age a call to religious life. When Margaret applied to the Maryknoll order, she was encouraged to wait. Margaret waited, but then she chose to enter the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
On Aug. 28, 1947, Margaret received the bonnet as a Candidate. She attended teacher-training classes and taught kindergarten children at St. James School, Baltimore. Margaret entered the novitiate on July 16, 1949 and professed her first vows on Aug. 3, 1950.
Much of Margaret’s religious life was spent as an elementary school teacher. Except for two years as the director of food service at Notch Cliff, Sister Margaret devoted almost twenty years to teaching at St. John the Evangelist School in Hydes, Md. She then returned to her home parish at St. Mary’s School, Hagerstown where she was active in many roles before coming to Villa Assumpta.
One of Margaret’s favorite ministries was gathering SSNDs for three weeks of religion and arts and crafts classes at the Hancock, Md. parish of her brother, Fr. Bill Glick, each summer. Margaret brought Sisters and family together in the Villa Assumpta gift shop projects: the winter jewelry sale, the Christmas cookie sale and special raffles. She wanted to create celebrations in which every sister could take part and have “good fun.”
A woman of many talents, Margaret was kind and gentle. She had a keen mind and was a patient listener. Margaret was a prayerful, positive person who didn’t give up and students felt that it was “a pleasure to be taught by her.” Sisters at Villa Assumpta viewed their time with Margaret as a privilege to be cherished.
Sister Margaret Mary died at Stella Maris Nursing Center, Lutherville-Timonium, Md. on April 20, 2022. The Mass of Christian Burial in memory of Sister Margaret was held in the Chapel of Villa Assumpta on Wed., May 25, 2022. The Mass was concelebrated by Rev. Lawrence Johnson, chaplain and head of pastoral care at Stella Maris and Rev. George Limmer, pastor emeritus of St. Mary’s Church, Hagerstown, Md. Interment followed at Villa Maria Cemetery, Glen Arm Rd., Glen Arm, Md. Sister Margaret is survived by her sister, Helen Stinett, and nieces and nephews.
